Hello all. I made it and am very excited to get started and hear your ideas. I don't want to go changing anything until we have had a chance to work it all out together

Hello. I am excited too. I don't know where to start. I'll wait until we are all together.

Here I am! Creating this wiki is a brillant idea... While waiting to get in, I thought we could launch some themes for discussion and to have students give their opinions. One of the easiest ways is : Favourite book, favourite character...
Later on, we could have them too work on a scene from one film and the equivalent episode from the book and have them to register the differences....

That's great. I have a student who is a great admirer of Professor Snape, so she asked if we could have a page on him. However, should we be careful not to reveal the end of the book, in case some people haven't read it yet?

Hello, Natasa
Why don't you ask the student to organise the page... Give suggestions on what to include, etc... Make her research for the material... Once you got it , we could create the section on characters and start with that one

Hey, that's a great idea. I'll ask her tomorrow. And here I was thinking I had to do everything.

My student agreed. She is a very creative person, I am really happy she wants to do it.
She has never edited a wiki page. Three months ago I didn't know wikis existed, so we are probably going to need a lot of help.

Natasa...join the club. I have never done this before either. Now we can empathize with our students when we ask them to do things (like poetry) that they are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with (excuse the hanging preposition). I can't seem to get into the discussion page and I don't know if you all have discussed this or if I should be discussing this on the brainstorming page, but should we divide up some of the pages and get them set up? I am on spring break this week and have a little time to work on it. Kim

Dear Sharon, Natasa, Carlos and Kim:
I am very excited with this idea, thanks for accepting me.
I am also a Harry Potter fan, the last two books I got them in English because I could not wait for the Spanish edition.
I am not very good at wikis either, I signed up a week ago to get one in beta version like this but I have not got the time to explore it. I join the club, it is an unfamiliar environment.
You have very good ideas to get students participation, to start with a section on favorite characters sounds wise.
Should all of us pick a character and start a page on it or how do we go about it?
I do not have as much time as you Kim but I would like to see this project flying. I would like to explore the inherent values of each character, the loyalty issue reagarding Snape it's great.
I have not tried to get into the brainstorming page Kim, let me try.
See you around. Love: Maru

Welcome Maru! for some reason I didn't get an email telling me that there was a new comment on this page, so I didn't know you were here. Sorry! Here are some questions I had...if anyone has any ideas...
1. is there a way to link the pages? When I see the top I see the front page tab and an edit tab. Is there a way to add the other pages as tabs or link it to the front page? Seems like there probably is and I just have missed it. I think this would make the navigation easier for all of us.
2. If we can do that, I had thought about making a "master page" titled favorite characters and then having links from that page to each character's page ( I tend to think in outline form-which is not the way everyone else thinks- so let me know your ideas)
3. Will the students have to have the same "writer" access that we have? I want them to be able to reply to each other and leave comments, but at one time it said that one had to have writer privileges in order to comment. I could be completely wrong about this. The students may be just fine with full access, I just tend to err on the side of caution...especially since they are way more technologically savvy than I :O)

Let me know what you all think.

Kim

Welcome Maru! I am really glad you joined the club. Kim, it is great to have someone in the team who thinks in outline-form. I am one of those people who brainstorm a lot, but I am not very organised. However, I did manage to edit the sidebar. I added your names and the links to all the pages. It isn't too complicated - first you create a new wiki page, the way we have done so far. Then you click Links. A window will open. It says Link type - wiki page. Link to wiki page - and it offers you the name of your page. You click it and the wiki creates the link. Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing. The best way to do it is to try it.
I guess the students will have to have the same "writer" access as we do. I am sure it will create a lot of confusion. Maybe there is another way to do it, but I don't know how it could be done.

Hi Kim! I am not good at wikis yet, with practice I may be able to answer your questions. Natasa did a great job, it will be easier to surf the site. About the witeer access for students I think Sharon is the one with the answers, maybe if the wiki goes public the students will answer. I know that with this wiki version you can set who can edit wich pages and which pages are kept private but I have not gone far exploring the features. I am kind of busy right now but I will make room to explore and test. Love: Maru

Hi guys! I placed a new page but I need to work with the images. They are too small. I will find out how to improve them and come back to sett it right. Love: Maru

Well, now I'm the one who is surprised... Look at the amount of work you have done in 24 hours... Guys, you are unstoppable... Kim, Sharon will be the one who can probably answer most of your questions... I don't know whether you can give them half the access, I mean, access to some pages but not to all. Do you want them to answer on line? That will cause another problem, as you'll need to know who wrote what... If it is the case, then what you need is something like a Script-O, where you can have answering on line and still know who wrote what and even evaluate. I made an exercise there during BAW and the link, in case you want to know further, is
http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=2393
Of course this would mean extra work, although part of it would copy and paste.

Thanks Carlos. I will check it out and search the wiki site to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all. Kim

Ok...here;s what I have found out...when they roll out wiki 2.0 we will be able to edit security clearance page by page to allow certain students to work on specific pages. I have submitted a help ticket for our particular need and am waiting to hear back. I will try to get the rest of the book pages done this weekend. Kim

I heard from the pbwiki people and there is no way to allow the students to comment on the pages without giving them full writer access. I guess our only other option would be to create a blog and link it for each page, but that seems like a lot of work. What do you all think?

Ok gang, I think we are about good to go. We can always add pages as we go along. Seems how the kids have to have writer access to leave comments, I decided to use it to our advantage. I set up some favorite character pages, but left them blank and invited the students to make them into real pages. Take a look and tell me what you think. Sharon, I think I am ready to "enroll" my students. What do I need to do?

Hi guys!
Sharon sent us an email today, we have rights for the wiki and ready to add our students. It seems she gave us rights before but we didn't receive the good news.
I've added a visitor counter to every page to see which is the most atractive and make decisions later on that data.
See you around.
Lots of hugs for all of you. Maru
